The legend of Ma-ae Buddha Statue
- It is said that the Uncheonsa temple was originally called Jeongtosa temple.
- It is known that Master Wonhyo, while staying at Wonhyosa Temple in Mt. Mudeungsan, saw the sky full of auspicious energy in the western sky and sent his disciple Bogwanghwasang. When he saw light coming out of a large rock, he carved Ma-ae Buddha Statue there.
- Contrary to legend, the Ma-ae Buddha Statue appears to have been made during the Goryeo Dynasty.
Features
- This is a stone Buddha statue carved into a vast natural rock wall with a building on it. Therefore, compared to the giant Buddha, the temple and the main hall are small.
- It has a broad face, long eyes, a tall nose, thick lips, long and drooping ears, and a very solemn look. In addition, a wide neck, broad shoulders, and a crooked posture show a stable and dignified appearance. This style is commonly seen in the Ma-ae Buddhas of the Goryeo Dynasty, such as the BukMireugam Seated Rock-carved Buddha (Treasure 48) at Daeheungsa Temple in Haenam.
- The body is exaggerated compared to the face, and the shoulders and hands are big. The figure holding a medicine bowl with both hands on the belly appears to be a medicine Buddha statue. This is a Buddha statue that shows the Ma-ae Buddha style of the Goryeo Dynasty, with a solemn and rigid face, a dignified and hard body, formal and relaxed treatment of the folds of the right shoulder, and the awkward appearance of the fingers.
- In 2002, the Main temple was built, and Mae-ae Seated Rock-carved Buddha was enshrined.
